Hout Bays very first pop-up cinema

Mainstream Mall pop up cinema

As the days are getting longer and the nights balmier, the onset of summer is the perfect time for a spot of entertainment under the stars. Mainstream Mall and Fisherman’s World, home to an open-air Amphitheatre dramatically positioned against the backdrop of an 800-year-old grove of Milkwood trees, is without a doubt the perfect spot for a pop-up movie concept being introduced to Hout Bay this October.

However, don’t expect your typical rom-com or drama at the Mainstream Mall Movie month. The first month of the pop-up cinema in Hout Bay introduces the Short&Sweet concept. Short&Sweet is a short film experience that started in London in 2006 and has expanded to 6 cities across the globe.

Each viewing sees a selection of the finest short films, music videos and short animations screened from around the globe; Old films and new films from established directors to filmmakers completely undiscovered. The films are curated to take audiences on a journey, challenging opinions and creating conversation.

Pop-Up Cinema is not unique. Outdoor cinemas are a massive hit with young and old all looking for an alternative way to enjoy the summer weather and the beautiful outdoor locations their cities boast.

Tricia Francois, PR and Marketing Manager for Mainstream Mall is excited for this new initiative. “Locals in Hout Bay, myself included, have wanted a cinema for years and we are pleased to finally introduce it to the bay. Plus our open air and intimate Amphitheatre at Mainstream Mall is just the most perfect space to host it. We look forward to the first of many movie events here”

Mainstream Mall is taking it one step further by offering “dinner and a show”. Simply book your seat at the next Short&Sweet cinema experience via the easy booking portal Quicket, and order your dinner at the same time. Choose from one of the three restaurants at the mall, select your dish and pay upfront for your evening’s entertainment. Or simply show up and purchase your tickets at the door. At R60 per person or R105 for a combo ticket for two, there’s certainly no excuse.

Dates for the shows: 9, 16, 23, 30 October 2019
Times: Doors opens at 6.30pm, show starts at 7.30pm and ends at approx. 9.15pm with a 15 minute interval.
